Pleasantly surprised indigenous healthcare support
Kaylene, daughter of 91 year old Elizabeth, didn’t know about dedicated healthcare for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and was pleasantly surprised and grateful at the wonderful support she and her mother received through Western Sydney ITC.
Elizabeth is a Ngarbal woman through her grandfather, who lived in Glen Innes, northern New South Wales.
His name was William. He used to box for the circus and went to war for his country.

Elizabeth has a chronic health issue and visited the Blacktown Hospital in 2022. Back home, Kaylene became acutely aware of the ongoing care her mum would require when she returned.
She applied for aged care, but needed to wait.
How Kaylene found Western Sydney ITC
On the patient information form for Blacktown Hospital, Kaylene shared Elizabeth’s details. As the primary carer for Elizabeth, Kaylene needed the hospital’s Occupational Therapist to check that the facilities she had at home to support her mother were sufficient, but this never happened.
The hospital referred Kaylene to Western Sydney ITC. She connected with a Care Coordinator from Western Sydney ITC who helped her arrange for an Occupational Therapist to visit, and supported Elizabeth by giving her a personal alarm that would automatically alert Kaylene if she had another fall.

They also gave Elizabeth a new walker.
“I work in childcare and was overwhelmed by the care Western Sydney ITC provided my mum and the incredible support they offered me,” says Kaylene.
“They are just simply wonderful people who are so understanding, compassionate and sensitive to their clients’ needs.”
