How others can help: Other Indigenous Healthcare Providers and Resources

Western Sydney ITC is part of a network of Indigenous & non-Indigenous healthcare providers, organisations and services that are here to support our community.

There are a number of alternative or supplementary services and resources available to help you in your health journey.

13 YARN

Managing and dealing with chronic health conditions can be overwhelming, but our people shouldn’t have to suffer alone.

13 YARN is the first national support line for mob who are having difficulty coping. Run by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, 13 YARN offers confidential, one-on-one yarning opportunities with a Lifeline-trained Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander crisis support person.

Available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 13 YARN provides a culturally safe and judgement-free space to talk about your needs, concerns and worries.

If you or someone you know is struggling, we encourage you to connect with 13 YARN by calling 13YARN (13 92 76).

Western Sydney Primary Health Network (formerly WentWest)

For more than two decades, WentWest has been supporting the Western Sydney Aboriginal health community. In July 2015, WentWest became the Western Sydney Primary Health Network (WSPHN).

The WSPHN Aboriginal Health team works to increase the accessibility of services, health literacy and the management of health conditions to provide holistic and culturally appropriate support to the local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community.

Programs it facilitates include:

Too Deadly for Diabetes

Too Deadly for Diabetes is a 10-week program for people with, or at risk of developing, type 2 diabetes.

Expertly facilitated by one of Australia’s leading health professionals, Ray Kelly, the program provides participants with a meal plan, exercise program, education and motivation with the aim of losing weight, improving health and reducing diabetes risk factors.

Marrin Weejali

The Marrin Weejali Aboriginal Corporation provides culturally safe counselling and referral services, primarily for Western Sydney’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community members affected by drug and alcohol abuse, and non-acute mental health issues.

Marrin Weejali provides counselling, group therapy, referrals and transition assistance, health support, case management and community work.

Baabayn

Baabayn Aboriginal Corporation connects Aboriginal community members to services that help them recover from trauma, reconnect to their community and build a sense of self-worth and confidence.

Baabayn has strong contacts in the community and prides itself on providing a welcoming environment where individuals and families can heal.

The Shed

The Shed is a welcoming community environment that supports the wellbeing of its members by supporting them in connecting with mental health, physical health, housing, financial, disability, legal and cultural services.

The Shed specifically considers the social determinants of Aboriginal health as a direct indicator to address the complexities of suicide, suicide ideology and suicide attempts.

The Aboriginal Counselling Service

The Aboriginal Counselling Service (ACS) delivers culturally sensitive and safe mental health intervention and therapeutic counselling services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

ACS supports, empowers and assists clients to navigate the health system and manage their mental health conditions.
